How do sunless/self-tanners work?
The principle tanning agent used in all self-tanning formulas is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This ingredient does not produce a “real tan” by increasing the skin’s melanin levels, rather it creates a tanned appearance by developing a brown color on the surface of the skin. The action of DHA is limited to the upper layer of the skin and involves a reaction between DHA and skin proteins and oxygen that produces brown compounds. This process is similar to what occurs when you slice open an apple and the surface of the apple browns when it’s exposed to the oxygen in the air. The development of color takes anywhere from 6 to 12 hours and the intensity of color is dependent upon the DHA concentration in the product as well as each tanner’s individual skin characteristics. The color developed by the DHA usually lasts 5 to 7 days and begins to fade as the top layer of the skin naturally exfoliates
How long will my sunless tan last?
The longevity of a sunless tan depends on the type of self-tanning application, the skin’s natural exfoliation process, and on the skincare regimen followed before and after application. On average, self-tanners last 5-7 days. A professionally application, I.e. a sunless tan received at a salon or spa, will last longer than an at-home application as there is usually a greater percentage of DHA used. • At-home application (lotions, sprays, mousse, etc.) = 3 to 5 days • Professional application (stand-up spray units, airbrush, Custom Bronzing) = 5 to 7 days The “life span” of a sunless tan also depends on your skin’s natural exfoliation. The faster your skin turns over, the faster the sunless tan will fade. The tan created by the DHA affects only the top layer of the skin and will begin to fade after 4 to 5 days as the skin naturally begins to exfoliate. Following a good skin care regimen before and after sunless tanning will help a sunless tan last longer. Exfoliating prior to a sunless tanning application and keeping skin moisturized afterwards are essential. Sunless tan-extending products with a light self-tanning bronzer, like Norvell Color Extender Pro-long moisturizer, help hydrate skin and maintain even, natural-looking color longer .
Why is keeping skin moisturized essential to maintain great sunless results?
It is important to keep skin moisturized after sunless tanning as dry, flaky skin will slough off faster and color will fade sooner. Your goal is to basically slow down your body’s natural exfoliation process. Sunless tan-extending products with a light self-tanning bronzer, such as Norvell Color Extender Pro-long moisturizer,, help hydrate skin and maintain even, natural-looking color longer by providing subtle bronzers.
Will the bronzers from a spray tanning application rub-off on my clothes?
If you are using a spray solution with a cosmetic bronzer (water-soluble make-up), some of the bronze color may rub off on clothing or bed sheets. This is most likely to happen when you get dressed immediately after tanning. To minimize the chance of the bronzers transferring to clothing, we recommend you wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your spray session. Try to refrain from physical exertion that could result in your sweating until you shower and wash off the cosmetic bronzers. All cosmetic bronzers used within Norvell® products are water-soluble. Therefore, in most cases, the color will come out of clothing in the wash. It is however important to note bronzers may stain light hair, wool, spandex, lycra, silks or other fine fabrics. If product comes into contact with hands or clothing rinse immediately
How long should I wait after using a self-tanner before I shower?
DHA solutions take about 6-12 hours (rapid 1-3) to fully develop. Clients will receive the best results if they can aviod bathing until the day after their sunless session. If they must bathe, they should wait a minimum of 6-hours after the application. If showering prior to the 16-hour post application recommendation, a simple rinse with water only, is best. Soap destroys DHA. Delayed bathing allows the DHA bronzer sufficient time to complete its reaction with the amino acids (proteins) within the skin. NOTE: It is important to educate your customer regarding instant/cosmetic bronzers. The cosmetic bronzer is the color that is immediately visible during the session and it will wash off during the first shower, revealing the DHA bronze tan beneath. An uneducated client may think their tan is washing down the drain.
Will I turn 'Orange'?
When used as recommended, Norvell’s professional and retail sunless tanning products are formulated to give a natural, just off the beach™ color, starting with our perfectly blended instant cosmetic bronzers that allow you to gently transition into your DHA tan over 24 hours after application. High pH levels in the skin can sometimes give individuals an undesirable, ‘fake’ non-natural looking sunless color. Sunless application on skin that is out of balance due to high pH levels sometimes results in what many people refer to as an ‘orange’ coloring.
To prevent this from happening, there are a few things you can do:
- Do not use bar soaps before your sunless session. A properly pH balanced skin cleanser will not elevate pH levels on the skin, and result in more ‘golden brown’ sunless tanning results.
- Norvell® recommends spraying the body with Pre Sunless xLaTan pH Balancing Spray prior to any sunless application. This product is formulated to lower the pH levels of the skin giving a more golden brown color, and maximizing your sunless results.
- Do not over-apply sunless products. In general, the darker your natural skin tone, the higher concentration of DHA (sunless product) you can apply to the skin and still maintain ‘natural’ color. Generally, those will fair/light skin tones should apply less DHA (sunless product) to the skin to ensure natural looking results. Be sure to not only evaluate how much product you apply to the skin, but what the concentration level of DHA in each product is. Sunless products that are designed to give a darker color may not be desirable for fair skin.

NOTE: It is important to educate your customer regarding instant/cosmetic bronzers. The cosmetic bronzer is the color that is immediately visible during the session and it will wash off during the first shower, revealing the DHA bronze tan beneath. What is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone)?
DHA is an acronym for Dihydroxyacetone. DHA is the active ingredient found in all sunless tanning products. It is a simple carbohydrate that is primarily used as an ingredient in sunless tanning products. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane, and by the fermentation of glycerin. DHA does not make your skin cells darker in pigmentation, but rather reacts with the proteins and amino acids found in the top layer of your skin to create a darkening effect or ‘sunless tan’. Read the DHA Story for more information about the science behind DHA and how it is used in sunless tanning products.
How does a spray tan work?
The ingredient that tans your skin is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a color less sugar that interacts with dead skin cells to create the tanned color. The DHA causes a chemical reaction with the proteins in the outer most layers of the skin, which causes the color of the skin to change, producing a beautiful natural tan. A spray tan does not dye the skin; the immediate color you see when your tan is applied is a color guide or bronzer that helps the technician not miss any sections and allows you to instantly see your tan. The DHA starts to react with the skin within 1 hour of the tan application and continues to do so for a total of 12-24 hours. A spray gun is used to spray a combination of air and tanning solution directly onto the skin, which dries almost immediately. In less than 15 minutes with a custom spray you can have a flawless tan that will develop over the next 3-12 hours depending on formulation used.
How do I prepare for a Spray Tan session?
Preparation and maintenance of your sunless tan is the KEY to sunless success. Make sure to read our online sunless preparation and maintenance guide prior to your sunless application. 1. Before your session,
shave, shower and gently
exfoliate the skin. The spray tanning solution affects only the dead skin cells. Your skin has a build up of dead skin cells on top of it. The thicker the layer, the sooner it will rub off. If you exfoliate, the layer will be very shallow, and it will take a while for it to “build up”. Your tan will last longer. 2. Make sure your skin is free of
perfumes, lotions, oils, deodorants, gels or any product on the skin that would create a barrier or cause the tan to develop unevenly and remove all jewellery. Many deodorants will stop spray tanning solution going through. Few moisturizers and makeup products can act as a barrier, not letting the full amount of the solution to attach itself to the skin. As soon as you’ve had your spray tan you can apply deodorant and make up.
Follow these important steps to ensure maximum sunless results: 1. Optimize your skin surface pH levels prior to application. Do not use bar soaps prior to your sunless tan, and apply Norvell® Pre-Sunless xLaTan™ Ph Balancing Spray. xLaTan™ works on the skin surface 3 ways:
- boosts amino acid levels, which work directly with DHA, to maximize sunless color results,
- balances the pH on skin to reduce any ‘orange’ coloring and produce golden brown results, and
hydrates skin for even and maximum absorption of sunless solution. For more information about XL-a-Tan, check out our insider tips.
What should I wear for a Spray Tan session?
You may wear whatever you feel comfortable in whether you wear nothing, underwear, a g-string or your swimming costume is completely up to you. You may also want to take into account clothing that you will be wearing over the next few days. For example if you are getting a tan for and want to wear a bra, then think about the style of dress you will be wearing such as a strapless dress in this circumstance if you want to wear a bra we would recommend a strapless bra to avoid tan lines. After your tan wear loose, preferably cotton clothing. Although you dry out in front of a fan, the tan needs to “set”, and the process will take about an hour. It is best to wear clothes and shoes as loose as possible, to make sure nothing rubs off. Ensure any clothing that is worn immediately after the application of the tan is dark in color to prevent the risk of staining it.
How dark will my tan appear after one application?
Results will vary based on the individual’s skin type and pH balance. Our solutions have been formulated to provide a color that will be appealing to the majority of sunless tanners, and a variety of shades will allow you to find the perfect solution for your individual needs. Your sunless technician should have all the tools needed to achieve the custom color you so desire
How long does a spray tan take to dry?
The solution should dry enough to re-dress in 8-12 minutes. Your spray technician can reduce this time by removing the spray gun from the quick disconnect air hose and “blow drying” the skin hydrates skin for even and maximum absorption of sunless solution. For more information about XL-a-Tan, check out our insider tips.
Should I allow the skin to rest between spray sessions?
It is recommended that individuals not tan more than 3 times in a 2 week period, to avoid build-up of tanning solution that will contribute to uneven wear-off. This allows a complete cycle of natural exfoliation and eliminates patchiness or uneven areas of wear, such as around the waist, inside the arms where the elbow bends, underarms, and backs of knees. These are natural areas of the body where friction from clothing and daily activities may cause premature exfoliation. In addition, spraying too frequently may also cause the skin to exfoliate more rapidly (decreasing the longevity of your sunless tan), as over-application can alter the skin’s pH levels, causing it to shed more frequently.
Is Spray Tan Solution safe to use?
Our exclusive proprietary tanning solution has been extensively tested and is very safe and all skin types.
Will sunless solution stain my hair?
Most people will not see any affect to the color of their hair; however, those with light blonde, gray or platinum hair may see some temporary discoloration from the cosmetic bronzers. This discoloration will easily wash out during the first after session shower. For those with lighter hair that do apply sunless spray products such Norvell® 360° Eco-Mist™, Norvell® Bronzing 4-Faces™ or Norvell® Professional Sunless Mist, we recommended spraying onto a cosmetic sponge for facial application, and blending into the hairline carefully. A hair cap may also be worn during application. Note: when wearing a hair cap, make sure to pull the cap back to expose the edge of hairline and tuck the cap behind the ears. Otherwise you will create a hard line around the forehead and temples.
How can I prevent patchy or uneven wear-off?
Many individual factors can contribute to patch or uneven wear-off, as each person’s skin is different. It is best to follow our Preparation and Maintenance Guide for maximum sunless results.
- Be sure to gently polish the skin before each sunless session
- Keep skin hydrated on the inside and out. Using a product such as Norvell Daily Replenishing 24 hours moisturizer or a daily application of Norvell Color extender Pro-Long Moisturizer will extend the look of your tan. This bronzing booster will also reduce the appearance of uneven wear and patchiness.
- It is also recommended that individuals not tan more than 3 times in a 2 week period, to avoid build-up of tanning solution that will contribute to uneven wear-off. For frequent sunless tanning clients, we recommend using Norvell Intensive Detoxifying Salt Scrub 1 to 2 times per month, to remove sunless tanning build-up. Be sure to wait at least 24 hours after Salt Scrub application before applying any sunless product, and do not shave immediately prior to using Salt Scrub. For more in-depth tips about how to best exfoliate to maximize your sunless results, check out our insider tips.
Will a spray tan ruin light clothing such as a wedding dress?
No, the tan will not ruin any light clothing but ensure that you have the tan applied the day before you intend to wear any light coloured clothing. Also remember to shower twice to ensure that all the bronzer has washed off.
What else can I do to extend and beautify my new tan?
We also offer a post sunless hydration and firming solution after your sunless session. The hydration solution conditions and firms your skin, works with the spray solution to help set and extend results, and minimizes any self tanning odour that may occur. Another option is to pick up one of our custom self tanning moisturizers to use throughout the week after your session. This product helps to maintain your tan’s intensity for a longer period. Great while on vacation!
How soon will I see the tanning result?
You will receive an immediate, all natural looking tan that will continue to develop and become darker over the next 6-12hours.
How long will my spray tan last?
There are a number of factors that affect how long a tan will last. Preparation and aftercare is very important if you want to extend the life of your tan. This means exfoliating before hand and moisturizing afterwards. Depending on your skin type and how each solution reacts with your skin your tan can last anywhere from <5-7 days<strong<5-7 days<=”” p=””> on average. It is best to use exfoliators that are especially customized for spray tan preparation, as they will not contain any oils or moisturizers, and so will not stop the tanning solution getting through. Wait a minimum of 6 hours after spray application before bathing or exercising. Moisturize skin daily to help extend tanning results. We carry a variety of products made specifically for the spray tan process. </strong<5-7>
Will swimming affect my spray tan?
Swimming in chlorinated or salt water or spa use can increase the rate in which the skin exfoliates, this causes the tan to wear and fade rapidly than when just showering alone.
How long should I wait after a tanning session before showering, swimming or exercising?
To give your spray tan enough time to fully develop, it is recommended waiting a minimum of 6 hours after tanning (unless otherwise instructed). Showering, swimming or exercising sooner may diminish the intensity of the tan.
Should I shave or wax before or after I get my spray tan?
Whether you shave or wax is completely up to you, both should be done before the application of the sunless tan. Ideally shaving should be done during your shower prior to your appointment and waxing at least the day before. When waxing ensures that all wax is removed otherwise the tan will stick to the wax and will appear very dark where the wax has not been removed. Shaving after the application will take off some of your tan, so shave on days when you really need to and ensure that your blade is sharp.
How Much Does This Cost?
We offer a range of tanning equipment and products to cater to all budgets. You can tan for as little as .80 cents a day on our tanning programs.
How Many Tanning Sessions Do You Recommend?
10-12 sessions is recommended to achieve a complete tan, sometimes more, sometimes less depending on your skin type and how fast you tan. Average skin requires an average of 3 visits a week during the first 2-3 weeks while building your base tan. Upon your arrival, one of our Smart Tan certified tanning consultants will provide you with a skin type analysis and recommend a program to help you to achieve your desired tanning goals.
Why is it important to develop a base tan?
A base tan created from moderate exposure to UV rays helps develop a natural barrier in the skin that protects the body from excessive UV light providing a natural SPF of 2-4. UVB rays stimulate the production of a pigment called melanin, which then oxidizes or darkens when exposed to UVA rays. Melanin absorbs and scatters radiation to thicken the epidermis, your skin’s top layer, thereby limiting the amount of UV light penetrating your skin. If a base tan is not developed or a sunscreen is not used, sunburn can occur and the DNA of your skin cells may become damaged. Even with the protection your skin has developed from a base tan, sunscreen should still be used outdoors when there is risk of overexposure. Remember though, too much sunscreen use inhibits our natural ability to produce Vitamin D within our bodies.
Are Protective Eye Goggles Necessary?
Yes. Health Canada insists upon it. UV tanning goggles must be worn in each of our tanning beds and booths. We have a wide variety of eyewear in regards to eye size and price to suit your needs available at the salon. Approved eyewear protects your cornea and retina from UV light damage that can lead to cataracts. The skin that makes up your eyelids offers almost no protection against UV light, so it makes no sense whatsoever to lie in a tanning bed without tanning goggles. The indoor tanning eyewear that we provide stops 99% of UVB light and 99.9% of UVA light, allowing only visible light through so you can see while you tan. Not using proper eye protection may also result in short term effects such as tired and itchy eyes, headaches and loss of night vision. You should never be in a tanning bed without eye protection, and be sure to purchase your own pair of tanning goggles to avoid the risk of easily transmitted infections like pink-eye.
Do I really need to use a indoor tanning lotion while I tan?
Absolutely! here are the benefits: Stimulate Your Tan. Unlike sun block, which filters the sun’s rays, specially formulated lotions can help you tan better and faster. They are great for helping you reveal a deeper, darker tone. Working with the skin, active ingredients supplemented in lotions increase the rate at which you brown, helping you get the most out of every tanning session. Using an indoor lotion will get you ready for swimsuit season in no time. Moisturize. Tanning lotions include moisturizers that keep your skin soft and smooth. Dry skin looks unhealthy, old, and dull. Dry skin will also reflect UV light, while hydrated skin absorbs the rays quickly into your skin. Moisturizing your skin while you tan will help you maintain a healthy glow. Look for items that contain aloe or hemp seed oil. Feel Great. It can get hot under those tanning tamps. To keep you feeling cool, you should find lotions containing elements that offer a slight cooling effect and a tingling sensation. Other formulas contain “sizzling” ingredients. These types of lotion help to color the skin in a shorter time, and their effects can last an hour or even longer, depending on your complexion. Nourish. Indoor tanning can dehydrate your skin. Look for lotions with skin-nourishing ingredients designed to slow down aging. There are many options formulated with skin firming compounds and vitamins that replenish moisture lost during your tanning session..
Is Indoor Tanning Better Than Tanning Outdoors?
Absolutely, because the output of UVB and UVA rays are controlled on indoor Tanning Equipment. Exposure times are also controlled according to the tanners skin type. Indoor tanning is smarter than natural sunlight as long as it’s used in moderation. For those who are allergic to natural sunlight (this is called “photosensitivity”) indoor tanning or use of our
Custom Spray Tanning is a sunless alternative.

How Are Your Beds Cleaned and Maintained?
We use a germicidal solution designed for indoor tanning to clean and sanitize our beds after each use. Our team regularly inspects the beds to ensure maximum intensity levels are maintained and lamps are changed regularly. All beds are closely monitored by our computer tracking system to ensure maximum output at all times. We use only the best quality tanning lamps to give you less red and more brown.
Can I Shower After Tanning?
For optimum results, it is recommended that you wait at least 4 hours after tanning to take a shower. You can wait even longer especially when using tanning products that contain bronzers. You definitely want to give the product a chance to develop and set on your skin before showering.
Why Does my Tan Fade?
A tan gradually fades then disappears because the epidermis, the top layer of your skin, replaces all of its cells every 28 to 30 days. While moisturizing your skin will prolong a tan, a tan can only be maintained by repeated exposure to UV light.
What causes white spots?
There are several reasons why white spots become noticeable on the body when you start tanning:
- Prominent white patches of skin on the shoulder blades and just above the buttocks can be caused by pressure from the body as it reclines on a hard tanning bed – inhibiting blood flow through the skin on that area. Since blood carries oxygen, an essential part of the tanning process, this area does not tan. Periodically shifting your body during tanning will make these patches disappear.
- Certain medications can react unfavorably to UV light exposure. For example, birth control pills can cause blotches and uneven pigmentation of the skin.
- White spots could also appear due to the presence of a fungus living on the skin’s surface. In this case, the harmless fungus absorbs the UV light that would normally penetrate the skin, causing a white spot. This fungus did not appear as a result of tanning – it simply becomes noticeable once tanning occurs. It can be remedied though the use of prescription drugs or a topical lotion – please consult a physician if you are concerned.
I Thought Vitamin D Only Came From Natural Sunlight?
No. The ultraviolet rays produced in tanning beds supply you with UVB rays which are responsible for the development of Vitamin D. Indoor tanning is a way to moderate how much Vitamin D your body takes in at one time. Indoor tanning is also an excellent source of Vitamin D during months where outdoor exposure to natural sunlight is not available.
What is the difference between UVA and UVB Rays?
UVA rays are the most gentle of the sun’s rays. They are responsible for completing your tan by turning the melanin in your skin a golden brown. UVB rays are responsible for the tanning process by triggering the skin to release melanin, as well; UVB rays supply your body with
Vitamin D, an integral part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

My skin never tans! Will a spray tan work on my skin?
Yes it will definitely work on your skin! On very fair skin we will apply a very light spray if you are concerned about going to dark or getting unnatural looking colour • Professional application (stand-up spray units, airbrush, Custom Bronzing) = 5 to 7 days The “life span” of a sunless tan also depends on your skin’s natural exfoliation. The faster your skin turns over, the faster the sunless tan will fade. Will a spray tan cause freckles in people who usually freckle when tanning?
No. There is nothing in the tanning solution that will cause more freckles to break out. In fact, in most cases, freckles and blemishes will become less pronounced because the lighter skin areas will darken and reduce the color differentiation between the blemishes and the rest of the skin.
I have very sensitive skin, should I be concerned with a possible reaction to the solutions?
If you are concerned with a possible allergic or skin reaction to the solution we recommend you first patch test a small area of the skin prior to a full body session We will be happy to arrange a pre-session patch test before scheduling a full body session. It is however important to note bronzers may stain light hair, wool, spandex, lycra, silks or other fine fabrics. If product comes into contact with hands or clothing rinse immediately
I have Vitiligo, will the solution cause a change in the affected areas?
Yes our sunless solution does work on the affected areas, however, it is important to remember the skin that is lighter “tans” and the unaffected skin areas also tan, therefore they will remain different colors. While both areas do achieve a sunless tan, they will appear “two toned” when finished. The color is a blend of the natural skin color and the sunless color. Sunless color is not a “cover-up”, but rather a blend. Customers looking to darken only the lighter skin will need to take care and apply solution to these areas only, and may be best served with any of the retail self-tanning applications available from our salon.
Is a DHA spray tan safe for a diabetic person?
We have received no feedback from any medical authority that would indicate a risk to a diabetic person, however, as you would before using any product on a diabetic person, we recommend each customer consult their physician before receiving a DHA spray tan application
Does a spray tan provide SPF protection?
No although your skin looks like it is well protected spray tans do not mean that you will not get overexposed. It is very important to remember to use a non-chemical sunscreen with SPF to use if you will be outdoors
